Rome is a city of art and\nculture. It is the city where the greats like Michelangelo and Bernini\nflourished as painters and sculptors. But they were not originally from Rome.\nBelow we pay tribute to those masters and artists who were born in the Eternal City.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artemisia Gentileschi<\/span><\/p><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Gentileschi was raped at\nthe tender age of 18 by her art tutor, who had been appointed by her father.\nHowever, after a prolonged trial, the alleged rapist was let off with a delayed\none-year sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident affected\nGentileschi and spurred her on to paint strong women characters from Biblical\ntexts. Her most famous work is Judith Slaying Holofernes<\/em>. It is said the\npainting depicts Gentileschi\u2019s revenge on her violator.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antoniazzo Romano<\/span><\/p><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With noted artists like\nRaphael and Michelangelo celebrated throughout the world as artists of high\ncalibre, many of Rome\u2019s own sons get overshadowed. One such example is\nAntoniazzo Romano, an artist born in Rome.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romano was a distinguished\nfigure among the early Renaissance artists with a wide range of scintillating\nartworks like the Virgin and Child with Saints<\/em> in Reiti and even\ndecorations in the  Vatican Palace which\nwere entrusted to the artist in the 1470s.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His most famous artwork is\nthe Annunciation <\/em>that can be viewed\nat the Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. It is near the neighbourhood where\nhe was born.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giovanni Baglione<\/span><\/p><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Baglione was a competent\npainter of his time, though he is best known for his disputes with the famous\nartist Caravaggio.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His art pieces, which\nsuccessfully display the chiaroscuro <\/em>style, can be found in the Borghese\nGallery. He is the author of \u2018The Lives of Painters, Sculptors, Architects and\nEngravers\u2019, a text which is read by art historians to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giulio Romano<\/span><\/p><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Romano was initially a\npupil of Raphael\u2019s. However, after the death of the great Renaissance painter,\nRomano inherited the right to be in charge of Raphael\u2019s art studio.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He continued with the\nunfinished works at the studio, including Villa\nMadama<\/em> and the frescoes of the Vatican, like the Transfiguration<\/em>. His most famous and celebrated art pieces, however,\nare the frescoes in Mantua<\/em>, Lombardy <\/em>and the Palazzo del Te.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicola Salvi<\/span><\/p><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Best known for his architectural marvel, the Trevi Fountain<\/em>, Nicola Salvi has had an everlasting impact on the people of Rome. The fountain is an awe inspiring structure in the Roman cityscape. Standing proudly as one of Rome\u2019s very own creations, the tours of the Trevi fountain<\/a><\/strong> is now an unmissable activity for the tourists the world over.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadly, Salvi died in 1751 before it was completed. Eleven years later the structure was finished by his friend, Pietro Bracci, when he sculpted the figure of Oceanus <\/em>in 1762.
