Palatine Hill<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The most famous of the seven hills, the\nPalatine is believed to be the site where Romulus killed his brother Remus and\nfounded ancient Rome. Romulus became the first ruler of Rome and initiated a\nsystem of government that soon became the supreme power of the medieval Western\nWorld.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally known as Mons Saturnius<\/em>, the Capitoline Hill held much political and\nreligious significance during the legendary, ancient period. It was located inside\nthe ancient Servian Wall the city walls in between the Forum and the Campus\nMartius. The early Romans used it as a citadel and the Temple of Jupiter, the\nlargest ancient Roman temple, was situated right on this hill.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esquiline Hill<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The largest of Rome\u2019s seven hills, the\nEsquiline shot to fame for being the site of Emperor Nero\u2019s Golden House (Domus Aurea<\/em>). It is believed to be the\ngrandest villa ever built throughout the history of Roman civilization spanning\nthrough the Palatine to the Caelian Hill. Though excavations are still taking\nplace, you can marvel at the exquisite stucco ceilings and frescoes on weekends.\nOtherwise, you can visit the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in the\nvicinity. It is the biggest church devoted to the Virgin Mary in the whole of\nRome.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quirinal Hill<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The northernmost of all the hills, the\nQuirinal is the official residence of the president of\nItaly, who lives inside the Palazzo del Quirinale. Interestingly, the palace\nwas once the residence of the Pope as well and housed several political\ndignitaries over the years, including four Italian kings, 30 Popes and 12\npresidents of the Italian Republic. Besides, there are numerous beautiful\nbaroque churches and monuments in the area, such as Sant\u2019Andrea al Quirinale,\nSan Carlo alle Quattro Fontane and the Quattro Fontane. Viminal Hill<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lastly, the smallest of the seven hills, the\nViminal is noteworthy for being the site of Rome\u2019s famous Termini Station, the\nPalazzo Massimo and the Teatro dell\u2019Opera. Two out of four National Museums of\nRome are located here. Also, you get to visit the ruins of the thermae Diocletiani<\/em> (Baths of\nDiocletian) situated towards the northeast of the hill. Originally, they were\nthe biggest baths of imperial Rome.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
